New Running Program

As mentioned previously we have started following Andrew Read’s week-by-week running program at Breaking Muscle. The program is geared towards new runners who start “later in life.” The article that accompanies the program is also quite informative. Though it was a bit of a slap in the face to see that “later in life” means anyone 35 and over. I’m not 35 yet, but what happened to all that talk of 50 is the new 40 and 40 is the new 30, etc.?

Despite disagreeing on how we classify age, I like the program and we have already moved on to the next week. We have been running 6 minutes / walking 4 minutes for 4 intervals for about a week. Today we ran 7 / walked 3 for 4 intervals. It was hard as the first day of every new interval is, but we could do it.

In addition, I did a little research and found an 8 km race in October that will take place in our city. We should be able to run a full hour by the end of July if we stay on schedule. I don’t plan on winning the 8K, but I think it is good motivation for us. It will be my husband’s first time running a race and my first in more than a decade and the first longer than 5 km.
